Tour Reviews

12.09.05: Bergen Norway

OK. Only one to say something, but i need.. I know that crowd around here is not so energic like some other places, but i'm sure that all of them liked every single minute/second of your gig.. Thanks for the show. (Amphetamine!!) (And as I sad, see you again for sure! Bergen or BGD, anywhere anytime.) ;-)
And it was nice talking to you (Steve and Linda)(thanks for the broken drumstick.. :-) kiss) Happy New Year! Hope for even better one, like always..

12.18.05: Brussels Belgium

Basically, I could insert Steve Wynn's diary entry about the performance and leave it at that, 'cause he nailed it down in a few lines:

We finished our tour at the beautiful large room at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels. It easily the best venue of the tour--a stage larger than some clubs we played, a large room that was surrounded by walls covered with star-like lights that twinkled and glowed at various times of the show. Exhaustion be damned, this was our last show and we let loose with a wild, no-holds-barred FreakPunkPsychoLoveFest that concluded with a deconstructionist version of "John Coltrane Stereo Blues" (...)

This was probably the fifth or sixth time I caught Wynn with the Miracle 3 and with fond memories of the tours in support of Here Come the Miracles and Static Transmission, it's obvious our hopes were high. While the man's earliest solo albums were good, but ultimately led him to somewhat of a dead end, his collaboration with Come (Melting in the Dark) kickstarted a second Renaissance. Since then, Wynn hasn't looked back and released five albums in a row that range from excellent to brilliant (the 2001 double album, in particular). The most recent one - ...Tick ...Tick ...Tick - is the final volume in a trilogy and basically continues the direction of the preceding two. Wynn's days as an innovator are over and he's settled for a certain style - drawn from several influences - but it's one that's appreciated by rock connoisseurs, who worship his mingling of classic rock and seething guitar freak-outs that combine the cerebral dissonance of The Velvet Underground with the grainy primitiveness of the classic Neil Young & Crazy Horse albums. On top of that, Wynn is also a gifted lyricist, a storyteller whose tales of love and hate and everything in between are both literate and spontaneous. It's no surprise, therefore, that he on his latest album, crime writer and longtime friend George Pelecanos co-wrote "Cindy, It Was Always You."

As usual, Wynn and The Miracle 3 (with new member Erik Van Loo on bass) tore through the most recent album as well as his previous solo work and the Dream Syndicate's material. Of the new songs that were played, the most memorable were the Diddley-chug of "Killing Me," which led to a seething climax in which Wynn and Jason Victor turned the intensity to 11, as well as "No Tomorrow," which, in Wynn's own words, tries to bridge the gaps between Queen, Thin Lizzy and the Allman Brothers. What he actually wanted to say is that it's a great song consisting of multiple parts, ranging from swaying pop to noisy guitar to a gospel-tinged finale. The gospel-element also returned during the victorious-sounding "There Will Come a Day." It wouldn't be a Wynn show if there weren't a few pleasant surprises and so we got to hear "Stare It Down" from the Come-collaboration and a rocking version of Dylan's "Blind Willie McTell." It wouldn't be entirely complete of course, without some seminal Dream Syndicate songs and Wynn, intending to rip things up, offered blistering interpretations of "Medicine Show," "Halloween" and "That's What You Always Say," while the audience sang along to the classic "Boston." Finally, a brutally effective song about a dysfunctional family ("The Days of Wine and Roses") and the monster jam of "John Coltrane Stereo Blues" (song each hardcore Wynn fan would put in their Top 20 of all time) put an end to a +2 hour show. The title here was once said by the late John Peel about his favorite band The Fall, and you could indeed say roughly the same about Wynn & his band: there are no hip gimmicks, no sudden sidesteps, no rock star bullshit. It's all done for the sake of the song, and when it's done with so much dedication and class, you just keep coming back for more.

12.18.05: Brussels Belgium

Unbelievable, all the concerts they gave and the distance they have driven and sailed to give a very good concert in the AB! I saw the concert in Vera-Groningen too, but in the AB Steve, Linda, Jason and Erik played better. The audience and the ambiance was also better. Am I right when I think that Steve and Linda play together a decade next year? That realy would deserve a celebration tour! Hope to see you then, KlaasJan.

12.18.05: Brussels Belgium

Sunday evening at the AB proved to be the perfect, ulimate coda for the "tick tick tick" European tour 2005.
As Steve stated in his tour diary, a wonderful concert hall, great atmosphere and great transparant sound (and of course those "romantic" stars against the wall and ceiling...). In the beginning I was feeling slightly reluctant about Steve's voice,
but of course he must be forgiven about that...our man with the most intensive touring scheme possible. Maybe even a wonder that he made it to Brussels alive and kicking. But soon "the crow" in Steve's voice had flown away, and the show turned out to be even more energetic and
uplifting than the few ones I had attended over the past
weeks. The gems were spread out over the enthousiast audience with much conviction : fuzzy, wild, and sometimes melancholic (The Deep End). Everytime it's a joy again to witness those guitar battles between Steve and the ever cool, stoic Jason. What an unbelievable solid unity, Steve and his M3!
The best of Dylan, Young and Velvet Underground united in one single band. And I still think it's amazing how fast Erik has settled down.
Highlights this evening : The Deep End,No tomorrow, Medicine Show (with the a-capella and sing-a-long part), and for the first time in years (at least for me) a wonderful "John Coltrane stereo blues" in the final encore! Time for a well-deserved rest for the band now. And already back in May :
I read something about a festival at the Patronaat in Haarlem (so far confirmed also
Calexico, Iron& Wine and Kevn Kinney), and Steve told me about a show in Rotterdam (probably Rotown ?). Hopefully Erik's commitments to Willard Grant Conspiracy will match the next tour scheme, and he'll be part of the line-up again. In the meantime I'm going to play all those songs all over and over again : "I've got Ste... on the stereo, baby, it feels allright...!"

12.18.05: Brussels Belgium

Hi Steve,
What a great performance. I was totally blown away. But what really struck me was the fact that this wonderful athmosphere was created only by 4 people making music. Unlike Iggy, you don't have to do the physical thing. Unlike the sadly missed Jesus & Mary Chain, you don't have to hide behind smoke and strobe light. Unlike Primal Scream, you don't have to maintain the drugged-up guerilla image to add value to your performance. It was the music that mattered, nothing else. The only other band that gave me that this year were The Saints. So please, come back soon ( and give Linda a kiss).

12.18.05: Brussels Belgium

Linda rocks !

12.18.05: Brussels Belgium

Wow, after listening to 'Tick... Tick... Tick...' I already suspected a somewhat 'heavier' show than we used to see a few years ago, but this was amazing! The last day of the tour, but you all seemed to be in great shape, when Jason came into the crowd he stood right next to me, I felt the urge to keep him there ;)
Hope you all got home safe, and wish you all the best for the holidays!
Kiss, D -x-

12.18.05: Brussels Belgium

well, i know Steve Wynn through my dad for a long time... finally "there will come a day" was that day .... i knew he was hard... but he totally blew me from my socks, and I'm a metal-fan... says enough!! Whenever he and M3 are around, i'll be there!!
Everything was incredible, only one point of criticism..... no "come back when you're younger" ... but i guess even Steve Wynn must get tired after two hours.....

12.18.05: Brussels Belgium

agree wuth what's been said. great show. guitars a bit silent in the beginning, but show got better and better...highlights for me: killing me, thats what you always say, wine & roses

Worth knowing : in Brussels, Steve & M3 played a thrilling version of Bob Dylan's Blind Willie Mc Tell. It made my previous cunning plan to shout for 'all allong the watchtower' pretty useless...

12.18.05: Brussels Belgium

I can only confirm the previous reviews. Absolutely mindblowing concert. Great crowd. They get better every time I see them. I can't hardly wait until they get next year

12.18.05: Brussels Belgium

Oh what a night. If I had to choose one band to play for me before I die, It definitely would be Steve Wynn & M3. It was an overwhelming-hurricane-of-a-show. If you want to see Elvis, Beatles, Clash, Ramones, Thin Lizzy on the same night, go watch Steve Wynn's fabulous band. As on the previous concerts of the tour, we had a mix of older (incl. John Coltrane stereo blues) and new material and it all sounded fresh, freaky and frantic. Like we say in Belgium, Steve : 'De cirkel is rond'. To make the evening complete, I managed to catch Linda's played-off-drumstick and even got a kiss from her after the show. Life can be beautiful when you're feelin' 16 again...

Whoow. What a great high speed R'n'R show!!!!!!!!!!! This has been my sixth show during this tour but definitely the most powerful. Strange situation: after five minutes into the show the stage lights turned out. Only seconds later a few guys with pocket lamps highlighted the stage for round about fifteen minutes (well, who's taking pocket lamps to a rock show??? Are those guys also carrying their gas cookers along to the show?). I remember only two slow songs ("The Deep End" and "What comes After"). A lot of great guitar duels and solos. A cool "Medicine Show" and the whole audience singing along to "go down to the medicine show". Two encores by the band, a third solo encore by Steve ("When You Smile"). Hope the band will be back soon ...

Steve & the Miracle Three made a very fine performance at Loppen. The crowd was pretty good, and there was a very good atmosphere even before the band went on. Having seen SE+M3 quite some times in Copenhagen, I start to notice some familiar faces. There seems to be a lot of regulars.

the audience was treated by an extremely well playing BAND with a great sound. That's what I would like a live recording on my home stereo to sound like.
Blistering performances included Freak Star, No Tomorrow, Southern California Rain, Sustain, When The Curtain Falls, Days of wine and roses and Amphetamine.
Material was mostly from the Desert Trilogy, Melting in The Dark, and from the best off DS.
The DS material sounded amazingly fresh, and a newcomer could easily be fooled to think they were SE+M3 songs. There were no ghosts around screeming for the original DS. Steve and the Miracle 3 made the songs their own tonight.

Amphetamine ended the first set with a blast. As the band left the stage, A group of people continued top sing the ending chorus 'Sha na, na na na na na', and continued until Steve returned to stage. Steve and the band picked up the thread and continued with another 2 minutes of Amphetamine.... Really cool, and thanx to the crowd at the front for making this happen with the band.

A great night.....

12.13.05: Copenhagen Denmark

thanx thanx
another great night with DS....uuuuuuuuuups SW love you all, and the ordience was 100% OK. with special thanx to Per, hæng and the black lady thing............

Loppen 2005. This was my fifth SW concert, and absolutly the greatest: Merritsville, Boston, Haloween, When you smile, When the curtain falls, The medicine show, Halloween, The Days of wine and roses - and a lot of solo stuff. Great band, great sound. It's Christmas to soon in Copenhagen. Thanks to the band, you're great!!!

12.12.05: Odense Denmark

My first time experience of Steve Wynn & Miracle 3..and I must I was amazed!!! One of my good friends, whos a big fan, took me to the concert. And what I imagined as an doll way to spend my monday evening turned into a great experience. The live performance of the band was great. Some of the songs could excalate to higher level, if you closed u're eyes you'll be in trance (it was so good acctualy). My favourites now Amphetamine and extra solo nr When u smile moved me... Most of the aduience were mid.aged men (me 23), but in this case it just shows that they know the good music.

After the concert my friend bought a live cd and went to get some autographs (he's a shy gay). I've spoken to Dave(bass) and Linda (awesome drummer) and got their autogrpahs, shared my after concert experience with them. Thanx for the music!!!

12.13.05: Copenhagen Denmark

hey, loppen 2003 was just great. they played for nearly three hours, we got the bonnie & clyde cover, we even got some john coltrane on the stereo baby :) i hope the atmosphere will be similar tonight, and that steve will throw in some good ol' DS songs

12.12.05: Odense Denmark

Monday evening in Odense – how boring does this sound to your ears? It could have been, but thanks to Steve and M3 it wasn't!
I've managed to convince my brother and a few of his friends to come to the concert too. At diner before the show we talked about when it would start. The tickets said 8.00, but it wasn't very clear if this when the doors would open or the time of the concert start. My brother still remembers way back in 1979 where we went to a Dire Straits Concert and he (being a bit older and – then – had more concert experiences) said a concert never starts on time. Well we saw the encores from Dire Straits... Anyway we decided to be at the venue at 7.50. This way, we would either be in time for the concert, or didn't have to wait outside for too long. We didn't have to worry about the cold. The venue was open, but not that many people yet so we managed to get one of the front tables. At 8.20 Steve and M3 took the stage. An early start for a rock concert but Steve and the band were ready to rock the house. The venue wasn't crowded and perhaps we wasn't ready because all remained seated, leaving the floor in front of the stage completely empty. Steve said it reminded him of the lounge at the cruise ship they sailed with from Norway to Denmark the night before (see his diary). And even though it was very nice to be able to sit down and enjoy the music it seemed like the musicians lacked a bit of response. When the first one or two in the audience came up front some 8-10 songs into the concert Steve encouraged more to follow: Come up here, don't be afraid. Sadly (or luckily) more did. The concert gained a lot from it, but my view to the stage got somehow blocked. Anyway we had come for the music, not the chairs and I followed the crowd to the floor and enjoyed an intense and rocking concert. It wasn't a night for long encores but we got Tuesday for the first time this tour (and I think it was the first time for Erik too) a few more and with The Days Of Wine And Roses ringing in our ears the band left the stage. Steve came back for a solo When You Smile and then, a quarter past 10 it was all over. Quite early for a rock concert, but the next day was working day for us all and we had got a blistering concert. My brother and friends had never heard Steve before but they all agreed, even though it was very very loud, they are among the audience next time Steve Wynn comes to Odense.

It ain't gonna be a long review - but just a thanks to Steve and the band for a rocking, energetic and magic concert - a magnificient night which Steve closed with a outstanding solo version of "When you smile". The best christmas present in the world - thanks.

12.14.05: Bremen Germany

Hey gang,"Boots" here,
the waiting comes to an end... Six weeks from Hamburg to Bremen (110km)!! The longest Umleitung/detour in the history of rock'n'roll, I guess... Don't know when you arrive here... but if you want let me know, send a mail... Looking forward to see you all!!
HolgerTrautmann@gmx.de

12.10.05: Egersund Norway

Great show last night. Can't help to be both impressed and greatful that Steve and the band bothers to play in our tiny town!
They actually seemed to enjoy themselves quite a lot. Well, except for the guitarist who looked...nonchalant, even arrogant, but who cares!? He played GREAT! The Days of Wine and Roses was, ofcourse, the greatest moment of the show. And oh boy! Linda on drums...

And a very strange crowd: From 18 year olds to 60 year old drunks, mixed with middleaged women in evening gowns and men in suits coming straight from their employers christmas party :-) Amd ofcourse: The Village Idiot who couldnt stand upright at the end but lay on his back in front of the "stage".

11.29.05: Brixton UK

What a great gig! This was the second time I saw the band in a week and I really enjoyed both gigs, some of the best live gigs for a very very long time (probably ever). I am not much of a Shakespeare so that's why I keep my review short. Anyway, thanks a lot for a brilliant concert.
Looking forward to see you again next time in London. CHEERS. Swedish Joe.

11.24.05: London UK

Just a quickie:
I just want to thank Steve and the rest of the band for one of the best concerts I have ever seen, you really blew my socks off! How lucky I was just a few days later to see them again down in the Windmill, Brixton. Thanks a lot. Swedish Joe

12.17.05: Heilbronn Germany

hi steve, saw you years ago at langenau, pfleghofhalle.
it was hot, steamy and loud :-).
happy to see you again.

12.08.05: Stockholm Sweden

I agree with the other comments, just 2 things

Not Dave this time.
Eric van Loo ? on bass this year.

I want to hear Nuthing but the shell, he has never played that one In Stockhom, not on the three last gigs here anyway.

12.08.05: Stockholm Sweden

After a tight performance of local support Micke Herrström and his band Steve Wynn&The Miracle 3 delivers an outstanding show. I'm not quite sure what was best tonight. As a guitarist I suppose I'd say Jason Victor's fiery guitars or maybe the cool twin guitar solo performed by Steve and Jason in "No tomorrow". That's as close as you get to Television and Lloyd/Verlaine today. But then as singer/songwriter I'd say Steve for having such a great catalogue of great songs to choose from. And he performs them so well. On the other hand what would a great band be without a great rhythm session. Linda Pitmon is definitely one of my favorite drummers and Dave DeCastro does his bit so well. Hope you come back to Stockholm again soon and next time I would love it if you played "Carry a torch".
The setlist not in order but more or less acurate was: Death Valley Rain/Cindy it was always you/Freak star/Killing me/The deep end/That's what you always say/No tomorrow/Amphetamine/ Medincine show/The days of wine and roses/Bruises/Sustain/ California style/Southern California line/There will come a day/Stare it down/Halloween/ Wired/When you smile

Listen to more great music at http://www.betarecords.com/theplasticpals

12.07.05: Oslo Norway

Great concert last night in Oslo. Wonderful mix of historic Syndicate, greatest from the 90's and powerful new material. Surprisingly active audience and a band that obviously had a much greater time than they had when I saw them in Liverpool 10 days ago. Steve ended the show alone playing old favourite Boston. The songs from Tick, tick... are of higher quality than I first thought......
Anyone else remember?

11.29.05: Brixton UK

Well this was an extra "Secret gig" booked by
Gurbs for the Miracle 3 on there way back to
Dover and on to Holland the next day.
The Windmill is a really cool pub-rock venue
sandwiched nicely between the Windmill of it's
name and Brixton Prison near the top of Brixton
Hill.
The pub was packed and the band came onstage by
walking through the audience.
It was obvious from the start that they loved
the venue and the energy in the room and blasted
the doors open with Halloween as an opener for
the scorching and wild show that came from
there.
Were Bedford lacked volume Brixton couldn't get
enough volume or power as they showed how Wired
they were and Steve told us all about a great
bookstore that he couldn't remember the name of
that had loads of George Pelecanos books in it,
which was cool as I just finished Hell To pay
the next day and need more of them. But Steve
was introducing the great Cindy It Was Always
you from ...Tick...Tick...Tick.
They gave us some real California Style while
Keeping it clean and just amping things up again
and again until they got to Wild Mercury that
was an absolute High spot of the set for a song
I hadn't heard before it burned and frazzled as
a song that is part 2 to Amphetamine should do.
The guitars just went mental and no amount of
mickey taking about the possibilities of Jason
Victor being Woody Allens love child could stop
him from giving us one of the best solos I've
heard in ages.
Damn those bruises hurt tonight, well what did
you expect it was hardly going to be the days of
wine and roses.
The encores had a blustering rampaging version
of Amphetamine that included Steve thinking he
was Eugene Chadbourne and trying to play his
guitar on the low ceiling damn it made some
great wailing sounds, thankfully he didn't have
a rake attached to it like Eugene used to.
Then we were Still Holding On To You that the
bass boss Eric still doesn't really know, but it
didn't matter as they nailed it and everyone in
the place with the blistering sound they got.
They even got Barry Everitt up to play
Tambourine on the closing number of a great long
set that I loved every minute of.

11.28.05: Bedford UK

Sorry for the delay on this review and the one for Brixton but I was out at gigs almost every night last week!

Well Part 2 of my Wynn Mania was a trip up the M1
with Nick from Bucketful Of Brains, with Gurbs
meeting us up there.
The journey was easy enough apart from the
tailback caused by a bad accident and confusing
directions once we got to Bedford, a very non-
descript town inbetween London and the Midlands.
Well as the Ent Shed's name suggested it was in
a large wooden shed that held about 300 people
if it was packed. But when we showed up it was
but a handful in there out on cold Monday night.
Because the place was wooden there were
restrictions on the sound levels so as not to
annoy the neighbors too much, which meant this
was going to be a "Slow quiet show!" a tall
order from this lot for sure.
Well they started by coming out as Steve Wynn
and the miracle 1, who introduced us to the
nights principal miracle a setlist written on a
Poppadum!!
They opened with a real quiet and almost chilled
version of Boston and it seemed this was going
to be a very different show to last week at the
Borderline. So it proved with the rest of the
band coming onstage while they started Nothing
But the Shell that had some sort of swampy thing
going on with it.
As they got used to the restrictions they
loosened up so that by the time they played the
Ambassador Of Soul you could almost see them in
matching suits and cheesy dance routines!!
Freakstar was totally different this quiet,
where the freakouts were replaced with an almost
country blues style solo. Charity fitted nicely
at this pace as did Bruises as it was more of a
slow motion breakdown into violence than the all
out war we had at the Borderline.
Towards the end of the set were a couple of
songs I didn't know one of which I assume was
Morning Dew as the band were all raving about
how well that had sounded afterwards.
The Deep End had a good shimmer to it that I
hope is also on the album version I still
haven't heard.
They bravely closed with a quiet version of
Amphetamine a song that is normally as hyped up
as possible it just simmered and simmered
beforecoming to an impossible boil to finish
things off.
Sorry I forget what the encore was, but it was a
very cool and different set.
All that was left was to hang out with the band
afterwards for a good long while before dashing
back down the M1 and back home by about 1.45am.

11.30.05: Utrecht Netherlands

this was a great, great show.
there was so much energy back down there in the ekko.
and steve and the band used that energy to give us a real good performance.
unfortunately they had to be back on the road again really quickly for the radio cast in amsterdam. But that didn't make it a badder show than it was. I love this venue: Ekko!!!
something with death valley rain/the deep end/cindy/wired/bruises/no tomorrow/californiastyle/amphetamine/day of wine and roses.
i really dunno any more.

Another amazing show by this great band. The first third of the show was slow and lazy - but nontheless great and producing goosebumps with songs like a slomo-"There Will Come A Day", "Never Ending Rain", "Blue Drifter" , "Ambassador Of Soul", "What We Call Love", "What Comes After" or "Blind Willie McTell". During the course of the show it got harder, faster, sweatier and frenzier. Great versions of "Freak Star" (with double-speed drums), "No Tomorrow", "When The Curtain Falls", "Still Holding On To You", "The Deep End". Highspeed R'n'R with "That's What You Always Say", "Amphetamine", "The Days Of Wine And Roses".

Been the first time that one of my requests got through to Steve so during the first encore I could listen to a wonderful version of "When You Make Up Your Mind" (Jason and Eric playing that song for the first time - seeing how they learned it "on the job" was really impressive - congratulation, guys!!!)

Wild two hour rock show on a rainy Sunday night in the small and intimate Schlachthof in Kassel. My first show this tour, and, boy, did it show me what I'd been missing this fall. The band started off a little hesitatingly, but things heated up quite a bit after half an hour or so. I won't go through every song, but among the many highlights were certainly a beautiful "Blue Drifter" and "Never Ending Rain". Dylan's "Blind Willie McTell" took a bit getting used to, especially since His Bobness's version grooves where Steve's simply rocks hard. Daring, I would say, but well done! Among the new songs, "Cindy" and "Freak Star" really gained a lot of power on stage. The latter grooved dirty and rocked surprisingly hard with wonderful drumming from Linda. And to witness a masterpiece like "No Tomorrow" live will surely remain among my favorite concert experiences ever. Besides, it's always nice to hear stuff from the previous tours thrown in for good measure ("Sustain", "Death Valley Rain", "Ambassador", "Amphetamine" - all sure winners). Steve thanked the audince for coming out on a rainy Sunday night and rewarded us with a nice long encore of five songs, including a beautiful "Deep End" (what a great song) and a sweet "When You Make Up Your Mind" as an audible. All in all a great, great night with an absolutely amazing band. Thank you guys so much! Hope to be able to make the gigs in Bremen or Cologne (or both?) before the tour is over. How about "Sweetness and Light" in Bremen? ... ;-)
(not in order) There Will Come a Day / Bruises / Cindy / Blind Willie McTell / Sustain / Ambassador of Soul / The Blue Drifter / Never Ending Rain / What We Call Love / What Comes After / Still Holding on to You / That's What You Always Say / No Tomorrow / Freak Star / Nothing But the Shell / When the Curtain Falls / Killing Me / Amphetamine
Encore: The Deep End / When You Make Up Your Mined / Days of Wine and Roses / ? / Death Valley Rain

p.s. steve, or jason, could anyone of you two send me some tabs of your songs?
I really would like to have butterscotch, so i can learn to play that one. You will hear it when you are back in may 2006!!!

12.02.05: Amsterdam Netherlands

When arriving at the Paradiso Friday evening the amount of papers, plastic bottles and other garbage, somehow raised the impression that here just had been the presale of another "secret" Robbie Williams gig been going on. But maybe I was mistaken about it all, and it just meant that Mr. Wynn had been building bridges to attract new disciples for tonight's show through an intensive PR campaign ;-) Nothing of that all...as it seemed later, all those youngsters had come out for the breaking-small- girls-hearts powerpop of some mediocre Dutch band in the main hall.
Though, I was lucky to make my way to the small and intimate upstairs hall for another memorable evening with Steve and his musical and travelling companions. The setlist seemed more or less the same as two days before at the Ekko. A few songs less, because the band was only allowed one and a half our. But, the show at least turned out to be as driven, inspired, wild and energetic!
The mini rock opera "No tomorrow" really has grown to be one of my most favourite songs...those irresistable repeating guitar lines by Jason...the pulsing, swinging bass line at the background...the tight drumming...Steve& Jason having this extended fuzzy guitar battle...the climax with Steve's nasal voice coming to strong rage-filled expressions (not fade away.....NOT FADE AWAY!!!)...and then the wonderful transition into part 2...a song that really's got everything... there's darkness, desperation...but also some prevailing hope and longing.
Again I enjoyed another wonderful evening.....leaving myself the sweatiest of all previous shows. And the evening was continued in style, with a fine performance of Jon Spencer and his combo Heavy Trash : true and inspired authentic rock and roll and rockabilly from this born entertainer/poser, a cross between Elvis the pelvis and Nick Cave.
So, that's it for now...but seriously considering coming over to the final show in Brussels.
Thanks for the wonderful shows and have fun!

What an amazing show last night. I had a great time, I hope you too! Thanks again for playing my request and for signing the Dream Syndicate DVD. Watching the DVD I thought...maybe you should return to your 1984 haircut to prevent people from comparing you to George Bush ;)
Hope to you again soon!
Can't remember the exact order:

Hi Steve, Linda, Erik & Jason, the concert last night was cool, it really made my day. I like Paradiso, specially the ‘kleine zaal' because it is so small and cosy – feels like you have been playing in somebody's living room. No wonder you could take us all on the bus.... I have a new supply of your music and guitar sounds spinning in my head. As the Dutch would say, tot volgende keer, Belgrade female support.

12.02.05: Amsterdam Netherlands

Steve, linda, Jason, eric,
you did a great job by playing a good show after all those busy days.
to bad i couldn't say goodbye to eric, lina and jason. me and vera searching them all over the place but nowhere to find. Wish you all god luck with the rest of the tour

12.01.05: Groningen Netherlands

Compliments to Erik van Loo, who plays as if he has been practising the songs for a long time already! I don't who many times I saw Steve playing at Vera's, but again it was a great show, very inspiring. I found the silence of the band and the audience during 'The days of wine and roses' impressive. And wow! I did not expect myself to be so happy with Linda signing my official bootleg CD, ... And finally Steve, George Bush has a pleasant naughty face sometimes, don't worry.

11.17.05: Rome Italy

happy tour dear steve!

11.30.05: Utrecht Netherlands

Another great show : a very energetic, ferocious rocking performance. And a great ambiance at the Ekko as well!
Surprise this evening : "Still holding on to you" as first encore.
Personal highlights : "Bruises", "No tomorrrow", "Killing me", "The Deep End", "That's what...",
And...as soon as the final chord was played...a quick walk, an intercity train and a fast bike ride...to be right in time for the "afterparty" at VPRO's
Club 3-voor-12. Cool to hear "Boston" there. And, sitting in some haze of sleep behind the desk at work now.
OK , time to move on now.
I have forgotten about the correct order, but it must have been something like this
(correct me when I'm wrong):

Deat valley rain/Cindy.../California style/Medicine show/Blind Willie Mc Tell/Bruises/No tomorrow/Blue Drifter/So. California line/Freak star/Wired/Whatever you please/The Deep End/Killing me/That's what you always say/
Amphetamine
encore : Still holding on to you/Days of wine & roses

11.29.05: Brixton UK

The roof was blown off at the Windmill last night as SWM3 played up a storm [not quite sure what the card-playing regulars at this pub venue made of it but for followers of the band it was just another great night]. The band emerged from the crowd and took to the 'stage' with Linda's rallying call of'Let's do this thing'. They didn't disappoint [not that this band could ever let us down!] with a real 'garagey' set of DS numbers as well as the new stuff. George Pelecanos got namechecked [and if you haven't done so, read his stuff...not that Steve could remember where the local bookshop was!]. Personal favourites from the night were Death Valley Rain and Merrittville. The pace was unrelenting, with brilliant guitar interplay and Linda's pounding rhythms from back of 'the bat cave'. SWM3....the best band in the world!

11.28.05: Bedford UK

Well judging from the photo of what I assume is the other poppadom on my mobile it was as follows.
But needless to say they didn't follow it. And it is only my guesses at what it says on the poppadom, great set and the band were raving over the version of Morning Dew they played afterwards,
Roll On Brixton tonight. Oh and they opened with Boston as a duo which was way cool.
Come day,
Names (Smudges)

Ambassador

These are as written and not actual song titles. I will try to email the photo from my phone and into the weboard for everyone!

11.28.05: Bedford UK

This gig was unique for 2 reasons. First the band had the set list written on a couple of popadoms. And the venue was a wooden shed that had some sort of decibel limit imposed upon it by the local constabulary. There seemed to be a decidel meter on the back wall, presumably to calm overenthusiastic musicians. I'm happy to say that Steve and Co had the thing in the red the whole time, but despite this the fuzz failed to arrive to spoil the party. In spite of these constraints, the band seemed to be enjoying themselves and the crowd, such as it was on a cold Monday night in Bedford, was appreciative.
I have a half eaten popadom, but since the ink ran, I've no idea what they had planned to play.

11.24.05: London UK

This review was first posted on www.usk.org in the forums there.
Sonic Waves and Raves
Steve Wynn & The Miracle 3 Live at The Borderline
London 24th November 2005.

This was the opening show of the uk leg of Steve
Wynn's current European tour to promote the
final part of his Desert Trilogy the new
album ...Tick...Tick...Tick whose cover
pastiches the Velvets first album but replaces
the banana with a red pepper on a black
background.
They came on to a packed club and an
introduction by Barry the clubs manager and
Steve's ex-tour manager that got everyone ready
for a really electric set and let us know of the
bands troubles getting to London and being stuck
in Dover with a broken van.
They opened with Death Valley Rain that had some
good distorted sounds coming out of Jason
Victors guitar, then it was time for the first
of the new songs Steve's collaboration with
George Pelecanos "Cindy It Was Always You" which
having not heard the album yet really grabbed me
first time, a great story of longing for a girl
that is no longer his, coupled with a band who
seemed to be playing as hard as they could just
to warm up after all the time stuck in the Cold
in Dover and on the drive up to London from
there.
Then we had a frazzled California Style followed
by the sort of road song they were in the mood
to batter to death as they did Southern
California Line it was magnificent seeing the
band interplay during the solo's with Eric the
new Bass player keeping a close eye on what the
others were doing.
The first real oldie of the night was Medicine
Show a song that never grows old, followed by a
song that was also being sung in South London
that night by some guy from Minnesota, Blind
Willie Mctell that Steve more than does justice
to with a burning intensity going to the core of
the song.
No Tomorrow and Bruises from the new album both
scorched by in hails of squealing guitars and
Steve's impassioned cries that the Bruises won't
show.
Freak Star was surely designed for Jason Victors
more demented guitar solos literally wrenching
unknown sounds from his guitar while breaking a
string. Wired started of slowly with Linda and
Steve being joined by Eric and Jason before it
just went bouncing around the joint like none of
us could sleep for a week can't stand still
rollercoaster of a tune. By the time they got
to That's What You Always Say a pretty frazzled
tune at the best of times the whole place was
rocking and the adrenaline had kicked in for the
band for sure, they closed with the rush that is
Amphetamine a song they seemed like they could
play all night long but in fact only did for
about 7 or 8 minutes but it seemed so much
longer a great closing song though.
Then Barry got back on stage to will the band
back on and introduce them all, before they
launched into a great version of When The
Curtain Falls that was just about the softest
thing they played all night but still had the
intensity that had been present all night, all
that was then left was for them to run ramshckle
through The Days Of Wine and Roses to confirm
that once more they had blown the Borderline
apart and that this is a band that has to be
seen again and again, roll on Bedford tonight
and Brixton tomorrow!!

11.27.05: Birmingham UK

We asked the Band afterwards if something had upset them lately, because there seems to be some serious angst/energy being burnt off on stage each night. The sparring between Jason and Steve was on overdrive again tonight, almost coming off the rails once or twice, but quickly brought back on line with juicy, crunching chords - why worry! Steve reckons he's playing fast'n loud 'because he can, and its our roots!'

'New' songs for the UK leg included There Will Come A Day, Boston (Eric on learning curve again!), Sustain, Ambassador of Soul, and Never Ending Rain. Today we had No Tomorrow.

11.26.05: Liverpool UK

The setlist for tonight was 'torn up' after a while, as the audience seemed much more familiar with older material. There were 3 or more invitations for requests to be played, which meant songs that Eric had never even heard! With a quick 2 second tutorial before each one, plus pointers through the songs, you'd never have known it. A nice show all round, even if we were thrown out of the room at the end so 'The Coral' could have an after gig party! Nice to meet up with fans from Norway afterwards (Luton FC!?)
No notepads, cameras, tapes etc. for me on this tour, so highlights that I can remember set-wise, are first plays on the tour for Still Holding On.. and Merrittville, plus a "first time ever" performance of Make It Up To You from Suitcase Sessions, as the first encore. A few chords from 'Hey Jude' sneaked into Amphetamine, the only Fab Four reference all night I think. A 'no show' for No Tomorrow. Too modern for Liverpool! Thanks to Hell's Ditch and Americana UK for the promotion, and good luck for the future.

11.27.05: Birmingham UK

Great gig for the small but appreciative audience - the band played with the energy and enthusiasm which characterises their performances. The audience displayed the usual British reserve at first, but we were soon bopping along. Pity about the support no show, perhaps next time you could drag some old Paisley buddies along - Russ Tolman might fancy it.

11.24.05: London UK

Thanks for the corrections on the setlist (and a great review!) - I'm glad someone was more on the ball than me.

11.24.05: London UK

In The Borderline I experienced last Thursday where a day of misfortune may ultimately lead to : an energizing, blood-pushing rock show. We don't know the whole story, but apparently the famous white van had broken down in Calais. That meant improvisation of course. Steve told an alternative vehicle had been arranged, in order to get the band still in time in London. I was imaging some "devil's ride" in an old ragged bus. Erik and Jason in the back of the blinded bus, without any contact with the green English hills surrounding them, dropping them disoriented right in the middle of central London (sounded like some kidnap in true Patty Hearst-style, as Steve referred to later in the show). Because of the late arrival, the last parts of the sound checking was still going on, when I entered the Borderline. And, the ones who had come out early where treated with a final full band sound check version of "Stare it down". The song was on the actual setlist, but didn't make its comeback that evening. Nice also to see Gerard Langley (singer/poet of Bristol outfit The Blue Aeroplanes) hanging around with the band (finally the long awaited Swagger-reissue in January and also a new album coming up).

So, the probable stress and frustration of the delays evoked some wild energy within the band, and the right ingredients for an extraordinary show. Everything simply "fitted", and in combination with the very enthusiast and responsive audience, the band reached undiscovered heights. This performance also made clear again, what a brilliant album "Tick...tick...tick..." is. The wild and frenzy rocking "Wired" and "Killing me", the perfect pop song "Bruises" (should definitely be released as a single!) , "The Deep End" (one of Steve's finest ballads ever)....the irresistable "Cindy,...." and "No tomorrow", the guitars taking different routes, teaming up again, losing each other, and coming together again...against a tight, continuing, background rhythm (I really dig this simple bass line), working its way towards a climax.....and for me personally to pure ecstasy. Jason must have broken at least three guitar strings this evening, great to see him throw away them in a rather indifferent way over his shoulder. Surprises this nights : two Dream Syndicate-songs that I've hardly ever heard Steve play live over the past 15 years : "Whatever you please" and "When the curtain falls".
OK, there was really no reason not to write down my feelings about this evening in superlatives : GREAT...GREATER...
For a few hours I find myself back home in Amsterdam again, and am already longing for the next few shows coming up here, some great distraction from the working life which in fact will start tomorrow again.

Jimbo...in my imagination your setlist needs some slight addition (oohh, that haze of alcohol ;-) :
The band didn't play "There will come a day", and "Stare it down" was replaced by "Whatever you please". Final song of the regular set was "Amphetamine".
Encore :When the curtain falls, Days of wine and roses.

11.18.05: Bologna Italy

I have put the photos of the concert in Bologna in my webspace.

Great show - if anything, even better than last time at the Borderline.

Roll on Tuesday night.
This was the set list, but it may not be 100% - I think he might have veered off it somewhere in the middle.

11.18.05: Bologna Italy

It was the third time i saw Steve in the last two years and this one is the best concert I've seen. maybe because the band have a great feeling, maybe because ...tick...tick...tick is better than static transission. great sound and great concert: thank you Steve.
Raffo.

11.18.05: Bologna Italy

The best show ever of Steve i've seen from 1992...great set list, roaring guitars, acid sound, Linda powerful and mighty as usual, Jason's guitar seems to be more creative and strong than ever,
Eric is a great bass player and a spectacular show-man and Steve...the one and only (Linda dixit)!!!!
Maybe the sound was too loud, Steve's voice was hidden and not perfectly clear when his guitar strummed in the noisest moments, but one of the greatest gigs i've seen this year...
Thanks boys, keep on rockin'!!!!
Diego

11.18.05: Bologna Italy

Bologna deserved an intensive, electric, amphetaminic show. Last time i can remember was '92 at Bestial Market. It was better yesterday (Jason Victor is not Robert Mache); the band was perfect, nothing to say, except for Steve's shirt. Great setlist. Yes, one of the best show of the year (Steve, you are with Elvis Costello and Paul Weller). After Modigliana last summer this was a ...pick...pick...pick

Will Steve & the Miracle 3 support the Green on Red show in London in Jan 2006... who knows ????? but maybe Steve & Linda will be lurking in the crowd.

Enjoy the rest of the long haul !!!

11.09.05: Belgrade Serbia And Montenegro

Steve, why didn't you post your impressions on Belgrade show yet?

11.10.05: Zagreb Croatia

Hi Steve and the Miracle 3 :) Three of us from Belgrade were in Zagreb last nite.Yesterdy morning, after Belgrade gig,we packed up and got ready to go in friend's car.We haven't planned it ahead ,we decided to go after concert in Belgrade, since we were blown out like never before(me,i am your man for ages,my wife, she likes you,but of course not that much as i do,and friend, who wasn't into your music, but after Belgrade gig- he's your man as well). And we knew that it's almost impossibile having that strong vibe between band and audience, two nights in a row ,but we knew set list would be at least 70% same as in Belgrade,so we took day off from work and decided to go.And the concert was awesome as well.I mean, you guys gave your best and that was obvious, but as i said, the vibe between you and audience wasn't that close as in Belgrade.Don't get me wrong,i really love all the people in the world who are into ur music, and i think audience in Zagreb was cool as well (generally i feel such sympathies for Zagreb people) ,but the fact that you've been in Serbia in the mid horror 90's ,when nobody ever showed here - i think that's the key of "Belgrade love affair" :)Anyway,i've watched the best concert in my life 2 nites before, and my 2nd best last nite (and i am not one of those who are visiting 5-6 concerts per year-i see that much almost every month, even more).
Keep staying young Steve, keep staying -damn,i'm outta description for Linda...-beautiful,awesome,smiley,you're such a one in a million..Jason-you keep staying better guitarist than Steve :) and you Erik-don't ever stop being that crazy.I know this is the place for concert review, but i really had to open my heart.Don't ever change people!Cheers.

11.09.05: Belgrade Serbia And Montenegro

OK. The show was great. Steve is cool. The band was excellent. Audience also.
But, people, hey, how about stop kissing his ass?

11.10.05: Zagreb Croatia

Ooops! You did it again! Keep on rocking.

11.09.05: Belgrade Serbia And Montenegro

The meaning of playing/listening to rock and roll was this concert.Dunno who was crazier - four of you or us, the crowd :)I agree with those people - next time in Belgrade, 2 concerts AT LEAST!Thank you guys and gal!

11.10.05: Zagreb Croatia

Steve Wynn & Miracle 3 gave us back the faith that true rock'n'roll will never die. Again excellent gig in KSET. The band was so good...

11.10.05: Zagreb Croatia

again, great great show! thanks! do not let us wait 2 years again for next show. respectah.

11.10.05: Zagreb Croatia

Great show!!! Thank you guys, you were amazing! Hope we'll see you again soon.

11.09.05: Belgrade Serbia And Montenegro

Now it's almost 24 hours after your gig here in Belgrade, and i still cannot stop thinking about it.Seems to me that connection between you and Serbian audience is really smth special, almost like in some happy family. You know, there's a bunch of bands coming to our city, and most of them say that best gig on their tour was one that happened here. But most of bands are such a sweet talkers. And i know,i really KNOW-when you say it,you mean it!I was the witness.Thank you for being such a great person buddy,i wish all the best to all 4 of you.

11.09.05: Belgrade Serbia And Montenegro

Yes, two nights next time Steve, two nights!!!!!!!!!!!!!

11.09.05: Belgrade Serbia And Montenegro

Dear Steve, I was on your Belgrade show two years ago and it was great. Last night it was even better. I am so excited, I don t know what to say except that only one Belgrade show during the tour is definitely not enough. Next time, you are to gig two nights at least. See you soon!

11.09.05: Belgrade Serbia And Montenegro

Last night was one of the greatest in my music life! I hope that we'll see you soon again . Thanks again, You 're absolutly amazing.Honesty yours - man with Riverside t-shirt.

11.09.05: Belgrade Serbia And Montenegro

11.09.05: Belgrade Serbia And Montenegro

10.29.05: Berlin Germany

forgot to mention "There will come a day" (first encore)

10.29.05: Berlin Germany

Last Friday me and my girlfriend travelled for a short holiday by train from Amsterdam to Berlin, the very interesting German capital with a rich, yet dramatic history, and a relaxed atmosphere. And what could be better than have this visit coincide with a concert by one of my most favourite singer/songwriters and his dedicated followers of passion The Miracle 3.
It would be the last of an "intensive" 3 concerts in a row, and finally proved to be a wonderful climax to add to wonderful concerts by Sufjan Stevens (Paradiso) and Teenage Fanclub (Berlin). After a decent Italian meal in the Prenslauer Berg area I headed to what would become my first Knaack visit. Absolutely a nice and intimate, somewhat dark club. But that's what I like, the informal youth centre type of club. With a pint of Berliner Weisse I took my place right in front of the stage. The hall slowly got filled.
What a joy it would be to listen to all those new gems from "tick...tick...tick", a really great album which a rank among Steve's best solo efforts (together with "Here come the miracles" and "Melting in the dark"). And based on the numerous live experiences I just knew that my highly raised expectations based on the quality of the new album, would be answered this evening. No question about that!
Just before 22.30 it was showtime. The band kicked off with "Death valley rain", which set the tone for a very inspired, dynamic, frenzy and tantalizing performance. The new songs somehow sounded like true classics in my ears already. The concert was an ideal mix of songs from "tick tick tick", alternated by sometimes surprising older solo stuff (great to hear the melancholic "Blue drifter" or "Stare it down" enter the setlist), the indispensable DS ones, "Halloween" (very appropriate), "That's what you always say", Dylan-cover "Blind Willie McTell", and the ultimate rousing climax in the first encore "The days of wine and roses", while the regular set was finished by the adrenalizing "Amphetamine" (shanananana...)
But, of course the many great new songs were emphasized : personal favs of mine this evening : "Bruises", "Cindy...", "Wild mercury" and "No tomorrow" (great lyrics and the sudden turn into part two")!!! "Sweetness and light" was given a very still and melancholic treatment, Steve as a crooner in optima forma.
The band was in top shape : the inimitable Jason playing the most incredible guitar parts in an almost stoic way , Linda keeping a tighter-than-tight rhythm, and fellow Dutchman Erik proved to be a solid replacement for Dave de Castro. And lovely to hear Steve sing his lovely tunes, fighting guitar ballads with Jason. One could perceive some chemistry that pushed the band to unlimited heights.
And there was the interaction with the audience which culminated in the encores when Steve and Jason stepped down from the stage into the audience to play a wild version of "The days of wine and roses". And I can confirm right now that it's not always a safe place to be just in front of the stage :-). In between two songs (I can't recall which one anymore), Steve seemed to have found a perfect "victim" in my person, when suddenly handing me his Fender stratocaster. What to do ? Just holding it, or maybe even lifting the guitar to prove honour to this magic invention ? Well, in a split-second I probably decided to choose the worst of options, by trying to squeeze some basic chords out of that thing, not being hindered by my mediocre skills (and that's an understatement). I found myself lucky that Steve found mercy at the same time, and saved me from a complete "demasqué" by taking the guitar back in his hands again. So, the next shows I'll probably find myself somewhat farther from the stage...but some instant guitar training might help as well...who knows ? All in all a memorable evening in Berlin.
And now it's waiting for the next few shows : London, Utrecht, Amsterdam......Life is great when you know that there is some big white van crossing Europe.

10.28.05: Hamburg Germany

It was a great night out in Hamburg! All these fantastic songs - the old ones and the new ones too - played by those excellent band in (almost) perfect form, more than two hours of joy'n'fun, plus one fine hour when the band met the audience in the bar after the show...Sorry, that we couldn't stay any longer, but... Lookin'forward to mid-December in Bremen & Hannover...
All the best and happy trails

10.28.05: Hamburg Germany

Friday evening at the old slaughterhouse in Hamburg, now renamed Knust and a small rock-club. The audience of less than 200 waited patiently through the opening act Chris Cacavas for Steve Wynn and The Miracle 3 to take the stage. But at last the lights went down, 1-2-3-4 and "Death Valley Rain" was played as the first song. I was surprised to hear this as opener due the dark mood of the song. Then followed the first of 7 songs from the new album "...Tic...Tic...Tic". After that a few well known songs before the first major surprise of the evening, a brilliant version of Dylan's "Blind Willie McTell". I heard Steve play this song when he toured with John Wesley Hardin back in 1998, but this version was far superior. By now Steve owned the audience and played 6 new songs in a row. The band surely loved to play the songs – and we loved to listen. Just as I thought it couldn't get any better Steve played "Nothing But The Shell" with the famous reference to Neil Young. When he plays in Denmark we all shout these words, in Germany, I think I was the only one who did that... The set ended with the normal showstopper "Amphetamine" – more wild guitar and heavy drumming. The first encore let us into a premature Halloween feast, and then Chris Cacavas joined for the hymn "There Will Come A Day" which made me almost cry. Partly because it's a beautiful song, partly I knew this was the last song of the evening. But we can all be mistaken as Steve hasn't finished rocking. "The Days Of Wine And Roses" and as much stage show as you get with a 4 (or 5) piece rock band. Heavy interaction between bass and drums and the guitars. At one point Steve jumped into the audience quickly followed by guitarist Jason Victor and a mike, and played on for a few minutes in front of the stage while Linda Pitmon, Erik Van Loo and Chris Cacavas stayed on the stage and provided the rhythm section. And then it was over – or not quite, the band just couldn't stop and came back for a 10 minutes "John Coltrane Stereo Blues". After almost 2 hours the band finally left but only for a brief moment as they all came to the bar and talked to fans and friends. How they manage to sign records and listen to more or less intelligent remarks from the audience after such a show I can't understand, but it only shows how much they appreciate the fans – and the appreciation is surely mutual!

What a wonderful setlist at this intimate club , as it seems to me. Unfortunately I have no time this week to travel to Heythuysen, but I'll catch SW & his illustrous Miracle 3 Saturday
in Berlin. Looking forward to.
The new album is cracking!!!

10.24.05: Heythuysen Holland

What a great start of the tour in a beautiful and small club. Been home at 2:00 A.M. but couldn't fall asleep because of excitement. The band played two sets, all songs of "Tick, Tick, Tick ...", some songs from "Static Transmission" and "Here come the Miracles" ("Ambassador Of Soul", "California Style", "Amphetamine", "Drought", "Shades Of Blue", "Watch Your Step", "There Will Come A Day"), a lot of Dream Syndicate classics ("Halloween", "That's What You Always Say", "Tell Me When It's Over") and some great and rarely played Dream Syndicate tunes ("Blind Willie McTell", "When The Curtain Falls"). First set ended with "No Tomorrow" and frantically guitar-work by the gods of guitar, Steve & Jason. Still hear the guitars buzzing in my ears.

Well, Erik Van Loo integrated very well. He played in the shades of the background and came into the spotlights at the last song of the second set to 'shanana..' with Steve & Jason ("Amphetamine"). Seemed to have a lot of fun playing with Steve, Jason and Linda.

Seeing SW&M3 live is definitely one of the things that make life worth living. Don't miss them.

The Dealer Of Seeds ;-)

9.16.05: Guadalajara Spain

Great show. Should have been longer.
The correct Guadalajara set list order was as follows:

Nothing but the Shell / Why / Southern California Line / California Style / No Tomorrow / Wired / Death Valley Rain / Burn / Bruises / Cindy, It Was Always You/Killing Me / What Comes After/ There Will Come A Day / That's What You Always Say / Band intros / Amphetamine / Encores: John Coltrane Stereo Blues / When You Smile (Steve Wynn solo)

9.15.05: Barcelona Spain

This is not a review but simply a short note to thank Steve and the band for putting on the hottest of gigs in our little barrio along the Sea. It was obvious that you guys enjoyed the night as much as we did (as in your fans). Special thanks to my friend Chris (New York/Boston) for urging me to go to the gig from afar. As Steve mentioned in his diary, the club Sidecar is a classic cavern, underground scene and the energy kicked out probably woke some of the fish up in the Medit. not far from the Plaza. Come back soon and I hope to see you at one of the other stops along the tour. Zig, a new fan.

9.17.05: Zaragoza Spain

i think there is no more ferocious band than steve`s band. i am still knocked down after his concert in zaragoza.
when everybody thought that all was over (i was buying the t-shirt) they appeared again in stage to play their acclaimed days of wine and roses.tremendous concert!thanks steve for remembering txitxarro concert with four american tour.

9.16.05: Guadalajara Spain

Another great night and another great concert from steve & co, this time an outdoor gig in Guadalajara, beautiful place, good crowd and as i said before another fantastic performance, very good sound. What else can i say? well, not much more, i absolutely loved it and i had my new 'Days of wine and roses' t-shirt signed by the band, nice keepsake, it will be hanging on my wall tomorrow.
And Steve promised to play "you can't forget" next time. That would be just great, i love that never played-live song.
they played "shades of blue" and "all the squares go home" on the soundcheck.

concert setlist (incorrect order):
nothing but the shell/why/southern california line/california style/no tomorrow/death valley rain/bruises/wired/cindy, it was always you/burn/killing me/that's what you always say/what comes after/there will come a day/amphetamine/john coltrane stereo blues/when you smile (steve solo)

9.10.05: Valencia Spain

Well, we wanted to see Steve and the band, and the UK dates are a bit difficult to get to, so we picked a city that we wanted to visit with a gig on a weekend night. Having been mad enough to travel from Scotland for this one, we were not disappointed! For a gig early on in the tour, the tightness of the band was incredible - I know they've been together for a few years now, but it really clicked. The new songs are integrating into the set really well - I bought "tick... tick... tick..." at the gig so hadn't heard them before. The only problem I now have is that with a back catalogue as big as Steve's, there are so many great songs that don't get played, even with a gig as long as this one (around 2 hours? I lost track...). Thanks to the band for your hosspitality afterwards - it was a pleasure to talk to you all - and I still don't know how you can exist on so little sleep! And finally, what a great venue - perfect stage height, good PA, friendly staff. Thanks again.
The setlist below was pretty accurate - but I can add one - "Definitely Clean"

9.03.05: Tublebras (Navarra) Spain

Hi, this is Jesus Jeronimo, bass player for the support band in Tulebras (Reno). Enric Nonell, a good friend of mine took some amazing pictures of Steve & the band that amazing night and he's posted them onto his website. Go check'em out in www.fotofotos.com since they're pretty cool.

Amazing show, that was.

9.10.05: Valencia Spain

They played, not in order:
Death Valley Rain, California Style,What comes after,Burn,Cindy,Wired,Nothing but the shell,The Days of wine and Roses(Who do you Love),When you smile,That's what you always say,a few songs of new album,Amphetamine,Why? and more

9.10.05: Valencia Spain

I enchant myself to return to see him sing in Valencia Mr.Wynn, the atmosfera created in the club was brilliant.
Please, very it would be been thankful if they published setlist.

PD:sorry,mi english is very bad.

9.10.05: Valencia Spain

great concert in the very nice loco club. Especially the last act when steve and jason played in the middle of the audience, this created a very special atmosphere like a private party....
Linda it was a pleasure for me to talk to you after the concert.
I hope we will see us again, I am checking the tourdates.
eric

11.09.05: Belgrade Serbia And Montenegro

hello steve!i'm counting days 'till belgrade gig.thanx for existing:)

9.08.05: Madrid Spain

also play Days of Wine and Roses

9.08.05: Madrid Spain

What a fantastic gig last night in Madrid. There was a lot of technical problems with Jason's amplifier, in fact, many songs were played as a trio but It was not a problem at all, at least not for me, they still sounded great; they had to change the set a little too which i also liked since they started to play some requests like Halloween and many old classics.
The sound was pretty good though Steve's voice gets a bit lost within the wall of sound created by the loud guitars (i really miss the acoustic guitar, in a few songs at least). Overall, the concert was amazing, they were in a very good mood, the crowd was very enthusiastic and everybody was happy in the end. They played two encores, the last one with Steve doing a solo performance of "when you smile".
I can't really wait to see him again next week in Guadalajara.
Oh, and the new record "tick tick tick" was for sale at the concert making my dream come true as i don't have to wait until october (when it's officially out in Europe) to buy it, i got my copy signed by steve before the concert started and he was as nice as always so it was a perfect night.
these are the songs that were played, i think i'm not missing any but the order is not correct:

Death valley rain
California style
Southern california line
What comes after
tell me when its over
halloween
wired
cindy, it was always you
the deep end
freak star
burn
killing me
thats what you always say
why
amphetamine
500 girl mornings
when you smile

9.11.05: Majorca Spain

thaks 4 coming to our little island Steve!!! we will wait for you KICK OUT THE JAMS!!!

9.03.05: Tublebras (Navarra) Spain

by the way the correct name of this town was TULEBRAS. And it's a beautiful small town with only 21 inhabitants and a monastery with closed nuns. The show was at the town's main square by the wall of the monastery!

And it was not a festival as Steve thought, it was a real Steve Wynn show. Everything was set up for him and the Miracle 3.

9.03.05: Tublebras (Navarra) Spain

During the last song both Jason and Steve left the stage and jumped into the audience, with their guitars. STeve later took the mike and sang from the middle of the audience. A very wild moment. The show was electrifying and around 500 people were in ecstasy.

9.03.05: Tublebras (Navarra) Spain

well, I was in the concert and it was fantastic.

8.24.05: New York USA

Last night's 7 pm "early" show at New York's Knitting Factory by Steve Wynn and the M3 was a 2 1/2 hour Steve-fest showcasing many of the songs from the upcoming album and many choice oldies too. There was a good crowd in attendance despite the fact it was still light outside when the show began. The band ripped, tore, shredded and jammed -- putting on a high energy performance that was enjoyed by all.

8.07.05: Modigliana Italy

Well, we drove about 1400 km to watch Steve play and it was worth the trip. Not only for the show, but also the Modigliana area is beautifull.
We thank all people from Strade Blu for all their kindness and Steve for a great show. The highlight of Steve's set was when he played with Howe on piano and mouthharp..... SUPERB
There's one odd thing to tell about the night and that is that I found out that the Italian people don't speak english very well, but I found out that in my Dutch dialect from my province you can sell more than 20 cd's for Steve.

Jaap - Holland

8.07.05: Modigliana Italy

I've made 200 km to see Steve on his only Italian date but the concert was great! The audience was 350 people. Steve play most of the show only with his guitar; the setlist was strange and great: acoustic Shades of Blue was superb! and I can say the same for Shelley and The side I'll never show only to talk about songs Steve doesn't play so much in the last years. He plays some songs with Howe Gelb (a very crazy man I didn't know before that is very similar to Bob Dylan): during the two new songs Howe play the piano and during Kerosene Man steve broke a guitar's string and replace his guitar with Howe's one and then he broke a string of that guitar too (and the when Howe Gelb plays his show he broke another string). It was funny and then I managed to talk a minute to Steve and have his autograph on my Complete Live At raji's cd.
Now I'm waiting for novemeber when he's gonna come back in Italy with the band: I hope someone taped the show and upload it to archive.org
I'm not sure about the order:

Aquello empieza a sonar y... Hallowen!

3.19.05: Austin, Tx USA

Got back to Blighty from Austin last week and have been in a jet-lagged daze ever since. South by Southwest was everything and more than I expected it to be: amazing music, gallons of Shiner Bock ale, endless margaritas, great food and the friendliest people.Caught over 70 bands (but admittedly around 20 of them played just 10 minutes at the Guided By Voices Hoot nite).
Managed to make five of the Wynn sets at SXSW - (should be renamed 5xSW). We all know what a well-oiled but still exciting rock'n'roll machine the Miracles are so it's almost needless to say Steve & the gang delivered an intense, hair-raising, guitar assault wherever they went - making new friends and leaving people stunned. One writer on The Austin Chronicle went as far as to say they were the best rock'n'roll band at South by Southwest this year (quite something with over 1,300 groups in attendance).
The kick-off Swollen Circus party at the Hole in the Wall featured three songs...Death Valley Rain, Bruises and Days of Wine and Roses.
The following afternoon at the Guitartown bash the Miracles played for around 40 mins and treated us to a blistering Coltrane.
Possibly the most rivetting and full-on show was the Twangfest party at Jovita's, a restaurant south of the city. The place was packed...waitresses weaving between the crowd to deliver huge plates of fine looking Mexican food and refreshments to diners. Caitlin Carey and Thad Cockrell had just played a well-received set of sweet aching country tunes and what followed must've been like a prod in the ass by a cattle prong for the many uninitiated. Songs not played elsewhere included Burn and an epic-sounding newy maybe called The Deep End.
That evening the Miracles had their 10 minutes before the assembled 200-300 or so GBV fanatics at Emos (inc. Rob Pollard). Dave DeCastro took vocal duties for the sing-a-long Alien Lanes classic A Salty Salute (I was told by Steve that Dave is the big GBV fan in the group) followed by Bulldog Skin (from Mag Earwig!)...Jason bent over his amp getting swathes of feedback with some GBV fans pointing at him in awed admiration (definite highlights of the hoot night along with Calexico's version of Non-Absorbing and the Silos with their 10 minute grind-core transformation of the pop-ditty As We Go up, We Go Down).
The next night the band took the stage at around 1am for their official showcase at Tambaleo (a large-ish joint on the wrong side of 6th Street with a too-low stage) as part of the No Depression night. By this point some of the crowd were jaded and drifting away after a very long night (managed to persude a few to stick around and they were soon dancing at the front). What the band played is a happy blur (unsurprising as it followed a Shiner-fueled evening during which I'd caught a stunning set by Brits The Crimea, Blanche, The Kills, The Ravonettes and a rejuvinated john Cale).
Dave and Linda headed back the next day to the East Coast leaving Steve and Jason to play as SW and the Miracle 1 at the Pop Culture Press Party. Unfortuntaly, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, the heaven's decided to open that afternoon as the duo were due to take the stage. Ever up for a challenge, Steve treated the crowd (sheltering under a tent 20 foot from the stage) to an improvised set of Clapton's Let It Rain, Medicine Show, Tell Me When It's Over and Neverending Rain (2 of 'em played by Jason for the first time)...before proceedings were brought to a premature halt due to the intensity of the passing squall...a perfect, poetic and memorable conclusion to the 5-day electrical storm that visited Austin in the shape of SW & the M3.

Steve, pardon me if I gush, but here goes.
I met Steve Wynn in September, 1977, when we were both, (cough-cough), students at UC Davis. At our very first dorm floor meeting, with everyone all pimply anxieties and fears on the surface, ("who are all these strange people I'm now forced to live with??!!"), Steve found the nerve to raise his hand at the very end and say, "Oh...and, uh...I want to start a Rock 'n' Roll band, if anybody's interested".
From that came Suspects. Then, Dream Syndicate, and...he's never looked back.
Steve's freshman roommate was a tall, quiet guy who, as I recall, played banjo. The registrar's office must have looked at Steve's and his, then, potential roommate's respective profiles and thought, "Hmm...both have an interest in music. That'll do!".
Though I'm sure they got along, Steve being an affable guy, I wonder what his banjo pickin' roommate thought when the Ramones poster went up. Ah, the lessons of social tolerance that can only happen on an all male, (not by choice, mind you), dorm floor.
Steve's room was on the other side of the hall. It seemed to be the only room from which the sounds of Pablo Cruise and Journey did not eminate.
In other words, sanctuary.

A few years later, South of Market, San Francisco:
I ran into Steve out on the sidewalk as he took a break from recording the second Syndicate disc. We only spoke for a few minutes, but it was remarkable to me then that it was the same guy. Same bright smile, same friendly greeting, just..now he's making records with bigshot producers.

Jump ahead, (gulp), many years later to last night at the King King:
It's probably been at least twenty years since I've seen Steve play live and I have only kept in touch via the occasional foray into his extensive recording catalog. I'm a serious music fan and serious(ly) hack guitar player and for some reason just hadn't pulled the trigger on checking out one of his live shows in many years until last night.
Sure, it was a "Who's Who" of the L.A. music scene performing. A remarkable collection of talent. Two up and coming local bands (the second of which really impressed), followed by the likes of John Doe, Peter Case, Dave Alvin, Michelle Shocked, and The Sin City Allstars, et al, but it was Steve I came to hear and, boy howdy, did I.
From the very first glorious, LOUD note, (I'll let others send a set list), I had the sense that I was watching someone who was born to be doing absolutely EXACTLY what I was watching him do. A true artist who chose just the right medium for his message. Sound and words. Steve and the rest of his, yes, miraculous band, beamed throughout.
And what of the sound?! A joyous maelstrom of Sonic Seafoam and heartbeat groove, that's what! Loose but RIGHT. REAL rock 'n' roll music. Innocent yet knowing. Dark yet transcendant. And, did I mention...FUN!! It was Neil Young and Crazy Horse jamming with The Velvets on "Nuggets" covers at Bob Dylan's Barmitzvah.
In short, I had a fucking ball.
I even found myself overcome with emotion a couple of times. Not out of nostalgia, mind you, but rather because of the fact that not only is Steve STILL in a KICK-ASS rock 'n' roll band some twenty-eight years down the road, but that he's having so much goddamn fun doing it. And though so much time seems to have whipped right by us, Steve, last night I was seeing that very same sweet, smart, innocent kid who put his hand up in a roomful of strangers and stepped forward into a life he was born to lead. It was overwhelmingly beautiful and inspiring.
I didn't send this to you directly like I intimated I would last night because I figured you, being a modest guy, would, understandably, never put it out for public viewing. I just thought I might share this with your fans.
Please count me in as one.
In the immortal words of Homer J. Simpson:
"No! No! Don't stop a-rockin'!!!"

3.10.05: Oakland, Ca USA

What a great show! To see an amazing band up live and close in a small place like this is a truly memorarble experience. The set included a few Dream Syndicate favorites such as "When You Smile" plus some tracks from the upcoming album just recorded in Tucson. "Wired" was, just as the title implies, high-energy and buzzing. Steve also introduced a new song he co-wrote with someone else (can't remember who now), "It was always about you..." (can't remember her name). Songs like "Sustain" and "Can I Look Into Your Eyes Again" stood out for me. The band played a tight set and were all in fine form. Jason Victor is an *amazing* guitarist. Dave DeCastro's fingers flew over his Rickenbacker bass. Linda Pitmon rocks! And Steve is one brilliant songwriter. This is a modern day Velvet Underground without all the drug crap. Spread the word - Steve Wynn and the Miracle 3 are not to be missed!

Joy.
Pure JOY, motherf****rs.

3.09.05: Davis, Ca USA

I am a simple man: in 1985 I started a band in Davis because I wanted to play Halloween in "perpetuity" (as we used to say occasionally in showbiz). I have since traded my rockband dreams for a daisho but my love for Davis, "those" bands "then", and that one song remain true. Davis hasn't really measured up (for me) as a fertile music scene in some time but I cling to what I know and remember. I still drink beers and eat strange food with my less surly friends at the G St. Pub and leave before the band (usually one in a long succession that fails to stir my imagination) though I am inclined to hang around for the Van Halen tribute with the singer who resembles Liz Taylor's backhoe driving ex and the road manager who looks like a less-handsome Barney Rubble (good). The audiences have always amazed me with their benign indifference but I never once doubted that I knew the reason (stated earlier). As a researcher, this led me to wonder what would happen if, instead of a musical instruments and a band, 3 Chechen mercenaries set up a crew-served heavy machine gun on stage and hosed the room. Would the audience pay more attention or continue to graze and talk about cisco routers and blow-jobs?
Due to the ethical and legal restrictions imposed by the former experiment I have had to settle for the next best thing...

Steve Wynn and the Miracle 3: Loose, efficient, persistent, and deadly
Audience: Some people I haven't seen in years and some knuckleheads.
Results: Made my damned night!

I realize I am selfish for wanting to hear so many Dream Syndicate songs but damn it; they were played well and true that night. The newer material was seamless in the set because everything was filtered through a rockband with enough experience to claim authentic mastery. Brains, beating hearts, and soul. On top of all that, drummer (Linda Pitmon) projected power in all ten directions, looked into the future, and reflected the night like a spotless mirror. I will think about the show for a while and maybe re-string a guitar so I can strum that D-chord that still haunts me.

3.08.05: San Francisco, Ca USA

Nice to see a well-oiled rock and roll machine. The band was they were incredibly tight and loose at the same time (if you know what I mean) and seem to really enjoy each others playing.

They opened with "Death Valley Rain" (if I'm not mistaken lifts a riff from Elvis' "Burnin' Love"). I'm sorry I don't have a complete set list, but they played a fair amount of new material from the album they just recorded and I thought a song called "Deep End" was a standout. They also played "Amphetamine" and managed to sprinkle in some Dream Syndicate songs "When You Smile", "Days of Wine and Roses" and one of my favs, "Merrittville" with Chuck Prophet joining them on guitar.

The only downside to the show was the volume. It was the loudest show I've ever been to at DuNord, and it detracted a bit from the music. We ended up watching the last 4-5 songs from the other room because it was painful.

That aside, an enjoyable evening of feverish, blistering rock and roll.

At Khyber, a Wynn is a win is a win

By Dan DeLuca

Inquirer Music Critic

If you've heard of Steve Wynn, you probably think he's the guy who builds really expensive casino-hotels in Las Vegas and Atlantic City.

The Steve Wynn who drew several dozen fortunate, impassioned fans to the Khyber on the coldest night of the year is not that guy. This Steve Wynn is the former leader of the Dream Syndicate, the Los Angeles post-punk band best known for its 1982 classic, The Days of Wine and Roses. This Steve Wynn has released a steady stream of bracingly intelligent, under-the-radar solo albums since 1990.

His music proudly synthesizes the influences of Neil Young and Crazy Horse and the Velvet Underground into a snarling, intoxicating twin-guitar attack - provided on Thursday by frizzy-haired string-bending whiz Jason Victor and Wynn himself - in songs that confront existential demons with a sly sense of humor.

This time out, Wynn and his band, the Miracle 3 - which included bass player Tom DeCastro and the fabulous Linda Pitmon on drums - hit the road with the intention of trying out material from a yet-to-be-recorded album. After opening with the wall of sound "Death Valley Rain" and the revenge fantasy "There Will Come a Day" from the
2001 opus Here Come the Miracles, five formidable new songs followed.

"Wired" sneered like something from the Sex Pistols. "Freak Star" was a psychedelic excursion reminiscent of Television. And the grabby "I Really, Really Hope That the Bruises Don't Show" (rhymes with "I fall down easy, but I get up slow") came off as a bemused rumination on a career in which sales figures have never measured up to critical accolades.

After the new material was successfully test-run, Wynn took time to reach back as far as Days of Wine's "When You Smile" and take requests, like the down-home "Kerosene Man" and the sobering "Butterscotch." And when the 80 minutes of cathartic rock were over, fans were left to scratch their heads once again over why the object of their enthusiasm isn't better known.

And then thank their lucky stars that after more than 20 years of excellence, he still belongs to them.

At the outset Steve looked around at the fifties-vintage, close-in Baltimore duckpin bowling alley and said, "This is surreal . . . but surreal is good!" Right on both counts. The band set up across two lanes, facing the snack bar and the entrance.

They actually played better than they did when I saw them a year and a half ago. I didn't think that was possible. New songs worked really well. The audience was appreciative, even the folks who kept on bowling (it was free, even the shoes, with admission).

The backup band, the Silos, was a treat. I'm going to look into their stuff. I hope the bowling alley flourishes forever. It's unrenovated but well-maintained, quite small, only 14 lanes.

1.28.05: Baltimore, MD USA

Surreal was the word of the night. I saw Greg Kihn solo playing in the deep end of a swimming pool (drained, thankfully) outside Tucson, AZ in the mid '80s - thought I'd witnessed the most bizarre rock 'n' roll setting until tonight. The bowling alley scene had a "Happy Days" feel to it. Linda joked beforehand that they might just do a Weezer cover. At soundcheck, Walter Salas-Humara subbed for Jason during "Tell Me When It's Over" while Jason finished a round of duckpins. When Jason tried to reclaim his spot, he was shrugged off by Steve. In retaliation Jason dragged Silos drummer Konrad Meissner up to center mike to "sub" for Steve on vocals. For a few minutes there we were treated to Steve Wynn and the Silocle 4.
The Silos played a tight set -the new stuff sounded great. Salas-Humara busted a string during his first tune and trooper Jason lent Walter his JM while he changed the string.
Steve was game from the start, turning down a request for a Gutterball tune, suggesting he might jinx the bowlers surrounding him. Toward the end of "DoWaR," after reeling the band in and briefly silencing them, he quipped that it was so quiet, "you could hear a pin drop" (ouch), before the band exploded into a frenzied finish, all while a family of four bowled one lane over, seemingly unfazed.
The band gets tighter and tighter each time I see them. They clearly enjoy playing together. While Steve has had excellent backing bands in the past, these four folks have evolved into a solid rock 'n' roll unit. Steve and Jason feed off each other; in introducing the new tune "No Tomorrow," Steve remarked that they'd only played the new material a few times and they'd have to see what happened. He and Jason proceeded to sonically egg each other on a la "Amphetamine."
I'm thankful that these folks enjoy doing what they do regardless of the size of the crowd - their hearts are in it and they go full tilt until the last note is played. I can't wait to hear what comes out of the Tucson sessions in March. I'm thinkin' I might need to play hooky and take the train up to the Lakeside for another fix...
Tim from VA

1.27.05: Philadelphia, PA USA

It's kinda hard figuring out what reference point Steve Wynn audiences are coming from. For those who don't know, he used to front the legendary Dream Syndicate--who along with Rain Parade, Three O'Clock, and early Bangles, were vets of LA's fabled Paisley Underground. Inspired by only the coolest shit from the 60s, the band grooved on extended feedback guitar workouts that owed as much to the Velvet Underground as Buffalo Springfield. That band broke up in 1988 and Steve embarked on a solo career built on solidly-crafted rock n roll that's been chooglin' along ever since. Nowadays he can at times be rootsy-adult-contemporary enough to sit along a WXPN listener-supported-radio playlist aside Steve Earle. Last time he played Philly, he did play at the Tin Angel--if that's any indication of his core audience.

So anyway, on Thursday, I went to see Steve Wynn & the Miracle Three at the Khyber. It wasn't the usual Khyber show-goer audience in attendance that night. In fact, I didn't see a single person there I knew. The crowd there was mostly kinda square, forty-something people. Maybe these people used be into rock music, but then had kids and stuff--and lost their style and gained potbellies. Maybe they were never cool at all. Who knows? Maybe they're all really cool, and I'm the lame one. Anyway, to be fair, I should also mention that there was similarly square younger people there as well.

It's also a good possibility that some of the crowd were there to see the opening act--a band called the Silos. I was mostly unimpressed with these guys. I elected to listen to their set from the bar. The singer had this gruff, earnest, Mellencampy sound going on. The band was tired, bland and utterly unoriginal. The music may qualify as "alt-country" but aside from one slide guitar number, there was very little true twang. They did, however, manage to pull off a surprisingly smokin' cover of "I'm Straight" by the Modern Lovers that almost makes up for the snoozefest which was the bulk of their set.

Steve Wynn's performance, on the other hand, was totally great. The last time time I saw him was at the afore-mentioned folkie venue, and it was just him solo with a second guitar accompanying (played by Jason Victor--who is also in his current band). So, on Thursday, I was eagerly anticipating finally seeing him with an entire electric band. His crack combo, the Miracle Three, played their asses off. The musicians were all excellent (the guitarist, in particular, totally wailed), but none were as foxy as his drummer, Linda Pitmon. She made this really hot "sex face" while playing which was really awesome. She was an ace drummer too, though. And I'm not just saying that because I'm crushed out on her.

The centerpiece of his set was the debut of five new songs which have yet be recorded. Usually when someone says "now were gonna play five new songs," admittedly I let out a groan. But it turns out those numbers were the wildest and most righteously garagey stuff I've heard from Wynn since the days of The Days of Wine and Roses. I even heard someone in the audience evoke the name of Television. Wynn/Victor definitely have the fire of a Verlaine/Lloyd... maybe even of a Wynn/Precoda. (For those keeping score, those new songs are "Wired," "Freak Star," "Wild Mercury," "I Really Really Hope That the Bruises Don't Show," and "No Tomorrow.")

Midway though his run of new songs, Steve broke a string and offered to take a request to pass the time while Victor took a break to replace it. I was tempted to shout out "John Coltrane Stereo Blues," but then I realized I would have been retarded to request a epic ten minute jam fest. Somebody kept calling out for "Halloween" but he didn't acknowledge the dude. Finally, Wynn settled on Roger Miller-y "Kerosene Man," the title cut from his 1990 solo debut. It was a treat.

Speaking of treats, Steve whipped out some bona-fide chestnuts near the end--not one but two Dream Syndicate classics dating from the earliest days of the band. First was wild-and-woolly rendition of "That's What You Always Say," followed a slow-simmering Velvety rendition of "When You Smile." On the latter tune, Pitmon uses the "Tucker-sticks" to further enhance the Velvetude. The guy has about a zillion solo records out by now. I think it's really cool that he's willing to dip his into 25 year-old back catalog and bring out some oldies.

The band closed with "Amphetamine" from his most recent album Static Transmission. Which I think I may need to buy. There's also a Steve Wynn best-of coming out. I think I may need that too.

In conclusion: Great fucking show. Can't wait for the new album.

Hey there Caught Steve & the Miracle Three's show last night at Maxwell's. Fine stuff. Loud rockin' guitars, could barely hear Steve's words in the first few songs. But I like loud guitars and wasn't too worried about it.

Jason Victor on lead guitar is amazing. Their first song called something Death was amazing. Loud slide guitar that created a fantastic droning riff around the garage rock. Classics like When You Smile and That's What You Always Say were very welcome later in the set.

One of the new ones seemed like two minutes too long for me. Steve asked the crowd after it if they liked it, cuz he said the band was on the fence about it. Indeed, it's kind of a boring song. and long. But that was the only miscue in the whole set.

I'll see Steve Wynn again in 2005. I put some photos up here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dfactor/

Check my song "Watch Me Strike Again!"
Sounds like old Dream Syndicate, yes?

As Steve quipped during the show it was surreal playing in a bowling alley while the bowling was actually going on. It was duckpins bowling with the smaller balls and pins so the noise wasn't a factor, but still it was pretty weird. It was fun seeing the band test driving some new songs before they head back to Tuscon next month to start recording the new album. The new stuff sounded really great! It was an intense edgey raw sound that at times reminded me of Television or Rocket from the Tombs. The band did a really fine version of "When You Smile" that sounded as fresh as ever.

Fortunately this show wasn't scheduled for the weekend, as the snow let up and the roads were clear. The band must have been well rested as they put on a tremendous set featuring (again) several of the new songs, with Bruises and No Tomorrow being particular highlights. If Jason was ill a few days ago, he must have recovered fully, as he was bounding all over the stage.

About 5-6 new songs, so maybe half of what will get played at the NYC shows?
Can't remember in full (or in order), but it included What Comes After, California Style, Death Valley Rain, Starfreak, Wired, Bruises, No Tomorrow, That's What You Always Say, and the encore concluded with 500 Girl Mornings.

You missed a hell of a show. They were full of energy and played 5 new songs (no tomorrow is my favourite one), but the others like bruises and freakstar are also something to look forward to.
Thanks for having me on the road and I hope Jason stomach is better by now.

You guys take the cake as probably the best band I've ever worked. Come back to Valentines soon!

Tonight's show in Buffalo has been cancelled due to the weather.

A Review of a review...
Hey man, are you 14 or something? Just you wait till you get this 'old'..I thought 'quite old' refered to folks in their 80s...I never realized that mid 40s is near death beds...that was the crowd, which is close to the age of fingers that play to us..you see, maybe our quite old wisdom is the reason we show up and much of today's youth is out there wanking to godsmack and doesn't get it...
possible baba...brady

1.20.05: Boston, MA USA

yes, Boston is a tough town, its also somewhat transient and many of Steve's fans have moved away or they're on to the next thing...i felt like one of the younger ones in the audience, the audience seemed to be quite old, there weren't any young people...i don't know why he doesn't attract a younger crowd, but he doesn't...and Boston is a young person's town. and if you ain't young in this town, you're an aging hipster who either doesn't want to hear old Dream Syndicate classics mixed with Steve's new material...or is just on to the next thing...the few that did want to see him were there and that wasn't a bad sized crowd really! i know, i've played TTs and the Middle East Upstairs to fewer people...

All of that being said, the set was excellent openned with a total ass kicking "Death Valley Rain"...and went forward from there...amazing songs for those who got out on a very cold evening.

Seeing Steve and crew last night at TTs reminded me that it had been 3 years since I had seen their last show, really too much time between..I was a little surprised that there were not many at the little club. It was my 1st time seeing them in Boston since I ususally catch them in NY and I was dissapointed that the folks of boston did not cram in..just bothered the shit out of me actually since I think of Btown as a fairly aware music area...shame on us...
and the band played on...They played quite a few new ones and hit a few chestnuts..Jason, i think felt abit ill but still pulled out some juicy notes..there were some moments where they got so loud, my ears burned and my buzz buzzed more...
twas good to see them again..and these guys should, in a just world, pack the orpheum...but thanks for coming up to the fridge..

It was after midnight, and right after the playing of Television's Marquee Moon through the house PA, when the curtain went up on Steve and the band. There were about 100 people in the club at that point (there had been more earlier and some apparently just came to see either of the opening acts, Gingersol and The Silos), and we got to
see Steve and M3 do a high energgy performance of 15 songs.

The show was mostly Steve's greatest hits, with two songs I just couldn't place -- there is a set list below. If there ever was a show where all the amps and sound equipment were set to 11, this was it.

A word about Southpaw itself: although there is a backstage there, members of all the bands were in and out of the club proper all night
(my guess is that backstage ain't great). I got to see Victor, Linda, Dave and Steve hang out with their friends before they went on stage.

Steve said that he will be playing small places in NYC in February (which will be posted on his website) to work out new material for the recording sessions in Arizona in March. He also joked that if you ever tell him you liked how he played something during those gigs better than what finally came out, he'll never speak to you again.
